MSR PocketRocket 2 Review: Two Years In
The PocketRocket 2 was my first backpacking stove and it’s still the one I keep in the ultralight kit when I want to go fast.
Performance
Boils 1L in 3.5 minutes in calm conditions. In wind, that number goes up fast – bring a wind screen or use your body as a shield. It has no built-in windscreen, which is the only real limitation.
Size and weight
2.6 ounces. Fits in the palm of your hand. Nests inside a mug or pot. There’s nothing to think about here – it just goes in the bag.
After two years
The igniter still works. The fold-out arms still lock solidly. I’ve run probably 60 canisters through it. Zero issues.
Who it’s for
Anyone who wants a no-drama stove that boils water fast and costs under 0. That’s most backpackers.
