Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2: Ultralight Done Right

I’ve used the Copper Spur HV UL2 in the Cascades, the Sierras, and the Wind Rivers over three seasons. It’s become the default tent recommendation for anyone who wants to go light without camping in a bivy.

Setup

Under five minutes once you’ve done it twice. The color-coded clips and poles make it intuitive even in low light.

Livability

The ‘HV’ (high volume) design gives meaningful headroom – I can sit up and change clothes without feeling like I’m in a coffin. Two vestibules means gear storage for two people.

Weather

Handled sustained rain in the Cascades without a drop inside. The bathtub floor and taped seams do their job. I wouldn’t push it into true four-season conditions, but for three-season use it’s solid.

The weight caveat

3 lbs 2 oz trail weight is impressive for what you get, but if you’re going solo you might look at the UL1 or a tarp setup to cut more weight.
