The Hammock Sleep System
A hammock is the easy part. The reason people try one, freeze, and go back to a tent is that a hammock has no insulation underneath you, and a sleeping bag will not provide any – your body weight crushes the loft flat. That is the whole problem this kit solves.
Total Weight
4 lb 14.3 oz for the 7 items above.
Why These Pieces
The underquilt is the load-bearing item. It hangs outside the hammock, so nothing compresses it. The 20 degree Incubator is the three-season choice.
The topquilt replaces a sleeping bag. A bag has a zipper, a hood, and a crushed underside you are paying to carry. A quilt deletes all three.
The underquilt protector is a windbreak, not insulation. It adds very little warmth on its own and a surprising amount on a breezy night, because moving air is what strips heat out of down.
The tarp is the shelter. Pitched high it is a porch, pitched low in storm mode it is a wall. This is the piece that decides whether a wet night is fine or miserable.
Swaps Worth Considering
Insulation is the only thing worth changing seasonally. Colder forecast: the Burrow 0 topquilt and the Incubator 0 underquilt are the same system rated for winter. Warmer and lighter: the Phoenix 40 underquilt drops nearly ten ounces, and the Get Out Gear topquilt is the budget entry into the same idea.
